Lysozyme Like Protein 2 (LYZL2)

Lysozymes, especially C-type lysozymes, are well-recognized bacteriolytic factors widely distributed in the animal kingdom and play a mainly protective role in host defense. LYZL2 is a member of a family of lysozyme-like genes.The deduced 148-amino acid protein shares 47% amino acid identity with LYZ and has both catalytic glu35 and asp52 residues, as well as 8 conserved cysteine residues found in all C-type lysozymes and a signal peptide sequence. Northern blot analysis of human tissues detected an approximately 1.0-kb transcript with strong expression in testis/epididymis and weaker expression in placenta.
