Lantibiotic Synthetase Component C Like Protein 3 (LANCL3)

LANCL3 encodes a loosely associated peripheral membrane protein related to the LanC family of bacterial membrane-associated proteins involved in the biosynthesis of antimicrobial peptides. The human genome contains three LANCL genes, LANCL-I, LANCL-2 and LANCL-3, located on chromosomes 2, 7 and the X chromosome, respectively . LANCL-I was the first member of the family to be isolated from human erythrocyte membranes. LANCL-2 mRNA was identified in a screening procedure for genes whose down-regulation resulted in anticancer drug resistance; thus, LANCL-2 was also called Testis- specific Adriamycin Sensitivity Protein (TASP). Comparison of the aminoacid sequence of these protein shows a high percentage of conservation between LANCL-2 and LANCL-I (75%).
