SLCO1A4, Belongs to the organo anion transporter (TC 2.A.60) family. Contains 1 Kazal-like domain. Highly expressed in brain, liver, and kidney but not expressed in heart, spleen, lung, skeletal muscle, and testis.Mediates the Na+-independent transport of organic anions such as taurocholate, cholate, 17-beta-glucuronosyl estradiol, estrone-3-sulfate, the cardiac glycosides ouabain and digoxin and thyroid hormones. May play an especially important role in the brain accumulation and toxicity of digoxin and in the hepatobiliary and renal excretion of cardiac glycosides. The SLC group of membrane transport proteins include over 300 members organized into 47 families. The SLC gene nomenclature system was originally proposed by the Human Genome Organization (HUGO) and is the basis for the official HUGO names of the genes that encode these transporters.
