Reticulon 4 Interacting Protein 1 (RTN4IP1)

RTN4IP1 encodes a novel mitochondrial protein that interacts with reticulon 4, which is a potent inhibitor of regeneration following spinal cord injury. The interaction of reticulon 4 with mitochondrial proteins may provide insight into the mechanisms for reticulon-induced inhibition of neurite growth.The deduced 396-amino acid protein has a calculated molecular mass of 43.56 kD. It has an N-terminal mitochondrial localization signal with a possible cleavage site, a putative conserved zinc-binding alcohol dehydrogenase domain, a C terminus showing similarity with oxidoreductases, and numerous sites for posttranslational modification by phosphorylation, N- and O-glycosylation, N-myristoylation, and attachment of a glycosaminoglycan.
