Glycoprotein M6B (GPM6B)

GPM6B encodes a membrane glycoprotein that belongs to the proteolipid protein family. Proteolipid protein family members are expressed in most brain regions and are thought to be involved in cellular housekeeping functions, such as membrane trafficking and cell-to-cell communication.The cDNAs, designated M6a  and M6b, are highly similar to the myelin proteolipid protein  and are expressed during early development of the mouse central nervous system. M6b is expressed in both neurons and glia and was detected in the cerebellar Bergmann glia, in glia within white matter tracts of the cerebellum and cerebrum, and in embryonic dorsal root ganglia Olinsky et al. (1996) mapped the gene to Xp22.2 by fluorescence in situ hybridization.
