Spermatogenesis Associated Protein 19 (SPATA19)

By searching for sequences similar to mouse spergen-1, followed by RT-PCR and 3-prime RACE of a human testis cDNA library, Miyamoto et al. (2003) cloned SPATA19, which they called spergen-1. The deduced 167-amino acid protein shares significant similarity with mouse and rat spergen-1. RT-PCR of 16 human tissues detected expression only in testis.Miyamoto et al. (2003) determined that SPATA19 contains 6 exons.By genomic sequence analysis, Miyamoto et al. (2003) mapped the SPATA19 gene to chromosome 11q.Spermatogenesis is the process by which male spermatogonia develop into mature spermatozoa, also known as sperm cells. Spermatozoa are the mature male gametes in many sexually reproducing organisms.
