CACNA2D4 is a regulatory subunit that alters the properties of pore-forming alpha-1 subunits, CACNA1A of voltage-gated calcium channels. It is processed into 2 peptides, an alpha-2 subunit and a delta subunit, that are held together by a disulfide bond.CACNA2D4a, encodes a deduced 1,120-amino acid protein with a calculated molecular mass of about 126 kD. CACNA2D4a has most of the features of alpha-2/delta subunits, including an N-terminal signal sequence, a conserved alanine residue at the breakpoint between the alpha-2 and delta peptides, a single transmembrane domain, 6 putative N-glycosylation sites, and 15 conserved cysteines that associate the alpha-2 and delta peptides together to form the functional subunit.
