Bhalla et al. (1999) identified C16ORF5 near a region of chromosome 16 involved in a de novo translocation ascertained in a patient with epilepsy and mental retardation, and cloned the cDNA. The deduced 261-amino acid protein contains 40% proline residues in 104 N-terminal amino acids and 14 cysteines in the C-terminal portion. It has a single N-glycosylation site, 3 N-myristoylation sites, and 2 phosphorylation sites. Northern blot analysis detected high expression of the 2.4-kb transcript in brain, weaker expression in heart, skeletal muscle, kidney, pancreas, and liver, and little to no expression in placenta and lung. Bhalla et al. (1999) predicted C16ORF5 to localize to the nucleus.Bhalla et al. (1999) determined that the C16ORF5 gene contains at least 4 exons and spans about 10 kb.
