C9orf24 was isolated using microarray hybridization to screen for gene expression differences between fetal and adult testes. The conserved testis development-related genes found in both human and mouse testes may include genes that are likely to be involved in testicular functions, including spermatogenesis.C9orf24 had higher expression in adults, compared to 6-month embryos. The specific function of this gene product has not been determined. Alternative splicing has been observed at this locus and three transcript variants, each encoding a distinct isoform, have been identified. Chromosome 9 spans about 145 million base pairs of nucleic acids (the building blocks of DNA) and represents between 4 and 4.5 percent of the total DNA in cells.
