FAM120C gene contains 16 coding exons and spans more than 111 kb. It also has an alternative second exon, exon 2B, derived from a positively oriented MLT1E repeat in intron 1. The 5-prime end of the FAM120C gene lies within a CpG island. CXORF17A protein has a calculated molecular mass of 120.6 kD. It has an intracellular N-terminal region that is rich in proline and contains short glutamine-rich and histidine-rich stretches, followed by 5 putative transmembrane segments. CXORF17A also has 2 potential N-glycosylation sites. The CXORF17B variant contains an alternative second exon and encodes a deduced 238-amino acid protein that is identical to the N terminus of CXORF17A except for its last 5 amino acids. The CXORF17B transcript also contains a second ORF that, if used, would encode a predicted 132-amino acid protein.
