General Transcription Factor IIIC, Polypeptide 5 (GTF3C5)

GTFs assemble in a complex on the DNA promoter and recruit the RNA polymerase. GTF3C family proteins are essential for RNA polymerase III to make a number of small nuclear and cytoplasmic RNAs, including 5S RNA, tRNA, and adenovirus-associated (VA) RNA of both cellular and viral origin. Transcription by RNA polymerase III is enhanced during viral infection by the expression of immediate early proteins of adenovirus and pseudorabies virus. Sequence analysis showed that the deduced 519-amino acid GTF3C5 protein contains a central helix-turn-helix motif and a C-terminal acidic region. Immunoblot analyses indicated that the expressed cDNA encodes a 63-kD protein that copurifies with the remainder of the GTF3C complex.
