Rat and human SLC25A25 share 97% identity. Northern blot analysis of several human tissues detected strongest expression in liver and skeletal muscle. SLC25A25 was also expressed in all segments of the human digestive tract examined. Immunofluorescence microscopy of a human liver carcinoma cell line detected endogenous MCSC in both punctate and filamentous patterns that overlapped mitochondria staining.The deduced 568-amino acid protein shares 65% identity over 411 amino acids with SLC25A24. RT-PCR ELISA detected highest expression in fetal liver, followed by adult liver, skeletal muscle, ovary, hippocampus, and caudate nucleus. All other tissues and specific brain regions examined showed an intermediate level of SLC25A25 expression.
