NHEDC1 is a sodium/hydrogen exchanger and transmembrane protein. Highly conserved orthologs of this gene have been found in other mammalian species. The expression of this gene may be limited to testis. Multiple transcript variants encoding different isoforms have been found for this gene. By EST database analysis to search for novel sodium/hydrogen exchangers (NHE) , followed by PCR, Ye et al. (2006) cloned NHEDC1. The deduced 515-amino acid protein has a calculated molecular mass of 56 kD. NHEDC1 contains an NHE domain consisting of 12 predicted transmembrane segments. Highly conserved orthologs were identified in mouse, rat, and macaque. RT-PCR of human tissues detected expression exclusively in testis.NHEDC1 gene contains 12 exons spanning 118.8 kb.
