PHD Finger Protein 23 (PHF23)

By searching for genes in a region of chromosome 17 involved in a translocation associated with acute myeloid leukemia (AML), followed by 5-prime and 3-prime RACE, Reader et al. (2007) cloned 2 splice variants of PHF23 that differed in their 3-prime noncoding regions. The deduced 403-amino acid protein contains a C-terminal coiled-coiled domain and a plant homeodomain (PHD) finger. The PHD finger is a structural fold found in nuclear proteins that is coordinated by 2 zinc atoms and is predicted to mediate chromatin remodeling.Using FISH and genomic sequence analysis, Reader et al. (2007) mapped the PHF23 gene to chromosome 17p13.The deduced chimeric protein contains the N-terminal half of NUP98 fused to the C-terminal functional domains of PHF23.
