Sodium/Hydrogen Exchanger 2 (NHE2)

The Na+/H+ exchangers (NHE) are membrane proteins involved in the regulation of pH and cell volume. Ghishan et al. (1995) noted that the exchanger (which they called NHE2) is found in several tissues, including intestine and kidney, and is highly expressed in villus and distal convoluted tubules. Ghishan et al. (1995) reported the cloning of a human isoform of NHE2. The predicted 698-amino acid protein is 99% identical to the rat protein and contains 10 transmembrane domains. Ghishan et al. (1995) used fluorescence in situ hybridization to map the SLC9A2 gene to chromosome 2q11.2. Pathak et al. (1996) mapped the mouse Slc9a2 gene to the proximal region of chromosome 1 where it cosegregated with Slc9a4.
