Inorganic sulfate is abundant in plasma and is present in nearly all types of cells. Entry of inorganic sulfate into cells across hydrophobic membranes requires a transport system due to inorganic sulfate"""s hydrophilic nature. The deduced 595-amino acid protein, which is approximately 82% identical to its rodent homologs and 48% identical to SLC13A4, contains 13 putative transmembrane domains; an intracellular N terminus with 3 potential N-linked glycosylation and 10 putative phosphorylation sites; and an extracellular C terminus with only 1 potential glycosylation site.Expression of SLC13A1 in frog oocytes led to a 40-fold sodium-dependent increase in sulfate uptake; uptake of other substrates was not affected.
